Signed "Prendergast" l.l., identified on labels and in inscription on the reverse. Oil on canvas, 25 1/2 x 32 1/2 in. (64.5 x 82.2 cm.), framed. CONDITION Good, lined, craquelure. PROVENANCE Through the family of Mrs. Charles Prendergast to the present owner circa 1963. N.B.: Copies of letters from Mrs. Charles (Eugenie) Prendergast and Dr. Carol Clark discussing this work accompany the lot. The theme of the idyllic shore view reoccurs throughout Prendergast's career. The views of specific locals which were so prevalent earlier in his career gave way to views which draw from various art historical sources (often ancient, classical, or non-western). After his final trip to Paris in 1914, these views became more personal and less tied to specific places and times. In terms of subject, brushwork and composition, the late shore views vary only subtly, yet they were well received and Prendergast continued to gain new patrons. His popularity and success never wained; only weeks before his death he was awarded a bronze medal by the Cocoran Gallery for the William J. Clark purchase prize for his LANDSCAPE WITH FIGURES, 1921.
