MAXIE TJAMPITJINPA 1945-1997 UNTITLED 1996 183 by 122 cm Synthetic polymer paint on linen Bears artist's name, size and Papunya Tula Artists catalogue number MT961008 on the reverse Provenance: Private collection, Alice Springs This painting is sold with an accompanying Papunya Tula Artists certificate which reads in part: 'This painting is associated with the Bushfire Dreaming at the site of Warlurkulangu north-west of Papunya adjacent to sand dunes. In mythological times two men, a Tjangala and a Tjampitjinpa, made a bushfire for hunting purposes but the wind was very strong and carried the fire over a large area. The painting depicts the fire at different stages; still burning in some places, smouldering in others and as white as ashes in others.'
