MAXIE TJAMPITJINPA 1945-1997 UNTITLED 1997 122 by 122 cm Synthetic polymer paint on linen Bears artist's name, size and Papunya Tula Artists catalogue number MT970318 on the reverse Provenance: Painted in 1997 for Papunya Tula Artists, Alice Springs Private collection, Alice Springs This painting is sold with an accompanying certificate from Papunya Tula Artists that reads, in part: 'This painting depicts the Bushfire Dreaming at the site of Warlukulangu to the north- west of the Papunya Community. In mythological times two men, a Tjangala and a Tjampitjinpa, made a bushfire for hunting purposes but the wind was very strong and carried the fire over a large area. The bushfire started at Warlukulangu then travelled south-west through Mt. Leibig and then continued further south to Amata in South Australia. In this work the artist has shown the smoke of the fire against the night sky '
