An irregular round cup-shaped bezel holds a small cabochon sapphire. The bezel is flat on the back, and the rounded hoop terminates at the shoulders in one coil. This type of medieval ring was popular in the Gothic period, appearing already in the thirteenth century, and continuing in the fourteenth century, and exists in gold, silver, and bronze set with different gemstones which were believed to have magical properties. The sapphire was generally worn by Clerics and was a reminder of their divine powers.
