January 12, 1943-Dated, Partially-Printed Document Check Signed, "Melvin H. Purvis," 1 page, 8.5" x 3", Choice Crisp Extremely Fine. Being a personal check both Engrossed and Signed by Purvis, made out to "Templeton's Jewelers - Chattanooga, Tenn." in the amount of $6 for "watch repair." Drawn on the First National Bank and Trust Co., Kalamazoo, Michigan. Tiny punch cancelled "PAID +1 20 43 74-42" well away from signature which is very dark and crisp. Various endorsement stamps on verso. A wonderful example with a great looking signature.
Melvin Horace Purvis II. (October 24, 1903 - February 29, 1960) was an American law enforcement official and Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) agent. He was given the nickname "Little Mel" because of his short stature.[1] He is noted for leading the manhunts that tracked such outlaws as Baby Face Nelson, Pretty Boy Floyd, and John Dillinger.
