Description: Memorial Sculpture Commemorating Sergeant R E Hawkins DFM & Leading Aircraftsman S M Cox No12 Squadron Royal Air Force Who Were Killed Near Andover Aerodrome 17th May 1926, the ornate and heavy memorial is made from a single sheet of steel which has been bent and distorted, a model of the Fairey Fawn aircraft in which the crew were flying at the time of their crash, made from the same material as the backing, has been made and mounted onto the memorial, as has a red painted Poppy. To the top of the memorial is a brass plaque which reads, ÂIN MEMORY OF SERGT RALPH ENGLAND HAWKINS, DFM AND LAC SYDNEY MARSH COX 12 SQUADRON ROYAL AIR FORCE WHO WERE KILLED 17 MAY 1926 WHEN THEIR FAIRY FAWN CRASHED NEAR ANDOVER AERODROMEÂ. Measures 81cm x 55cm. Sergeant (Pilot) Ralph England Hawkins was awarded the Distinguished Flying Medal (DFM) for gallantry in connections with operations in Waziristan, North West Frontier in 1925. The award appeared in the London Gazette on 20th November 1925. Both Sergeant Hawkins and LAC Sydney M Cox were killed when their Fairey Fawn II (J7221) Spun in landing at Andover Aerodrome on 17th May 1926.
