October 29, 2016
Memphis, TN, USALive Auction
Distributed in 1975, this impressive marble etching was created by artist Dennis Bivens, who created a number of these artworks for limited editions celebrating many of America's greatest cities. This example graced the walls of Colonel Parker's office in the mid-1970s, and was surely a proud, if not somewhat more upscale, addition among the posters, awards and promotional items normally covering his walls. Entitled "Memphis / City Beautiful," the artwork shows every important landmark in Memphis, and there nestled between the statue of W.C. Handy and Goldsmith's Department Store are the gates of Elvis Presley's Graceland. The offered artwork is number 435 of an edition of 2,500 and has "Memphis" and "City Beautiful" etched at the bottom center. On the lower right is the facsimile etched signature "D. Bivens." The framed display measures 20 1/2 by 26 inches (52.07 x 66.04 cm), while the marble etching itself measures 15 3/4 by 20 3/4 inches (40 x 52.71 cm). Accompanied by a letter of authenticity from Graceland Authenticated.
Condition Report: The heavy frame shows signs of minor display and storage wear including a number of small scuffs and scratches, while the artwork itself remains in very clean condition, with few discernible distresses. Excellent to Mint condition overall.
