190 SL was the sales designation of the legendary Mercedes-Benz convertible with a four-cylinder engine, which was inspired by the American importer Max Hofman. The internal title given to this series was W121. From 1955 to 1963 25,881 models were built. Despite its similarity to the 300 SL the 190 SL is based on a platform frame with subframe. Also obtainable were versions with a hardtop roof. It was technically based on the Ponton model sedan. Daimler-Benz advertised the 190SL as ‚Touren Sportwagen‘ (sportscar). The 190 SL made 105 hp when the Porsche 1600 only did 75 or 90 hp and was with 175 km/h faster than the Porsche, despite of that it was not used in motor sports. The Mercedes 190 SL can be seen in more than 150 movies.
