MICHAEL NELSON TJAKAMARRA BORN CIRCA 1949 KANGAROO STORY AT WANTAPI 1988 224 by 212cm Synthetic polymer paint on linen Bears artist's name and Papunya Tula Artists catalogue number MN880559 on the reverse Provenance: Painted in 1988 for Papunya Tula Artists, Alice Springs Private collection, USA Literature: The artist's winning design for the Parliament House forecourt, Possum and Wallaby Dreaming, 1984, is illustrated in Johnson, V., Michael Jagamara Nelson, Craftsman House, Sydney, 1997, cover image and p.60, pl.17. See also pp.82-91 for a section on the mosaic. The artist's country at Pikilyi (Vaughan Springs) lies at the intersection of a number of Dreamings and is an important ceremonial centre. This painting is similar in subject matter and composition to the artist's famous mosaic in the forecourt of Parliament House in Canberra, which was inaugurated in 1988. The design for the mosaic was selected from several submitted by a group of Papunya painters because it best reflected the work of parliament as a meeting place for a variety of peoples to establish the laws by which their society is governed. This painting is sold with an accompanying certificate from Papunya Tula Artists, Alice Springs
