Notes: Still Life with Roses is one of a series of still-lifes in an Impressionist style that Larionov executed during his Parisian period. Works such as these are difficult to date with any accuracy since Larionov rarely dated his works on execution. Stylistically, however, the painting resembles those works that we know were definitely executed in the late-1920s and 1930s and so the work might reasonably be dated to this period. The painting will be reproduced in the catalogue raisonné of the artist's work, which is currently being researched.
We would like to thank Dr. Anthony Parton, University of Durham, for kindly providing this catalogue note. Dr. Parton wrote the critical monograph Michael Larionov and the Russian Avant-Garde, Princeton University Press, 1993.
