This drawing is listed in the Archives Légales Amédéo Modigliani, Paris, under the number
46/1913.
The elements which Modigliani's drawings of faces derive from are the basic geometric forms: the circle, the oval, the points of intersection and boundaries of two curves, the rectangle, the triangle. A vertical line is often formed on the neck and the overlong axis of the nose. Modgliani's drawings are in close connection to his sculptures although not all his drawings were realised in sculpture. The strictly geometric composition of the face can be found in both media.
Modigliani aspired after an ideal of beauty in the simplest basic forms. "Mondigliani's draftmanship is highly elegant. He was our aristocrat." (Jean Cocteau, quoted and translated after: Exh.-Cat. Modigliani. Ein Mythos der Moderne, ed. by Christoph Vitali, Bonn 2009, p. 118).
