Moral, Jean: Paris street scene
Paris street scene. Early 1930s. Vintage warm-toned gelatin silver print. 26,7 x 20,7 cm. Mounted to original board (soiled, some traces of use), signed by the photographer in pencil below the image on the mount; photographer's stamp, number stamp and annotated in pencil on mount verso.
One of the most notable French photographers of the late 1920s and 30s, Morals's style was influenced by Modernism that was evolving in Paris during this period and he continually experimented with abstraction and the use of multiple exposures. He exhibited widely in the 1930s together with Laura Albin-Guillot, Brassaï, Man Ray, André Kértész and the rich talent pool that existed in Paris before the Second World War. He also completed magazine and fashion assignments for Harper's Bazaar, Match, Paris soir, VU, Post, Le Figaro Illustré (Paris), Diversion and Die Dame (Berlin). He flourished at Harper's Bazaar from 1933 to 1952 with the other talented photographers of the period such as Louise Dahl-Wolfe and Martin Munkacsi. He also took photographs of the Spanish Civil War. - A few minimal retouched spots, otherwise in very good condition.
