Description: [Hunting/John Leech Etchings] [Robert Smith Surtees] MR. FACEY ROMFORD’S HOUNDS. By the Author of “Handley Cross,” “Mr. Sponge’s Sporting Tour,” “Ask Mamma,” Etc. Etc. With Illustrations by John Leech and Hablot K. Browne. Lon: Bradbury and Evans, 1865. 24 hand colored plates. 1st edition. Field pp225-228. Sadlier 3165. Tooley 477. Bound in 1 volume, with the front wraps from 12 original parts tipped in during recasing (Part II’s at front, Parts I, III-XII’s front wraps at rear of volume). Parts I-VIII have a printed date at top-center of front wrap (“May” to “December”). Part XI: “March.” For Parts IX,, X, and XII, Bradbury and Evans used surplus wraps from Part V. Thus, those 3 parts have a printed number “V,” crossed out and replaced with a “9,” “10,” or “12.” Part 12’s price was raised from the printed “1s” to a handwritten “2/-” in the same way. On the versos of those 3 front wraps, the ads are those of Part V. Field notes variation in the wording of the wraps. Here the front wraps do not have “Facey” in the title, and they are printed on brick red paper. (Tooley notes red paper. Field notes brown paper.) Lacking rear wraps and the separate ads leaves. (The only ads present are those printed on the versos of the front wraps). [i]-vi, [vii]-[viii], [1]-391pp. Red leather, teg, uncut fore and tail edges, gilt decorated turn ins, marbled eps. Recased, most of spine laid down. Custom slipcase (1/4 leather and maroon cloth). Front wraps show mostly minor wear (sometimes more noticeable, affecting legibility of ads on verso of Part VI’s front wrap). Plates near fine.
