Description: Reddish sandstone. India, Madhya Pradesh, approx. 12th century

This long frieze corner-fragment offers a vivid depiction of 11 figures including men, women, as well as children, most of whom are seated. Sitting on the outer left is a bearded Rishi, who is the most important character in the scene. Rishi are primordial wise saints from the Himalayas. The most well-known of them is Kashyapa, considered the patriarch of many deities. All other figures in the frieze are directed at him (except for one) – the second last figure is kneeling and holding his hands in adoration, and only the last figure – a boy – is standing up. Most of the seated figures are in lalitasana pose with one leg tucked in and the majority of figures are sitting on a four-legged platform. A tree is depicted on the corner and the frieze is bordered by straight, densely worked horizontal bars at the top and bottom.
From a Viennese private collection, afterwards collection Sohel Ch., New Delhi - Vienna

A noteworthy share of the antiques offered here – around 130 lots – originate from the Collection Sohel Ch., a successful business man from Delhi who spent many years in Vienna. The part of his collection, which we here offer, was mainly acquired in the art trade of Vienna. The chief reason for his collecting activity, which he perpetuated with considerable specialized knowledge, sense for quality and great committment, was to establish a private Asian museum in his native city of New Delhi. Because of severe illness, it was impossible for him to realize his plan and he thus decided to submit us the entire complex of his "Viennese collection" for sale.
