Rare work on music, it consists of analysis of and commentary on Italian musician Giuseppe Tartini's "Trattato di musica secondo la vera scienza dell’armonia" (Padua 1754). Benjamin Stillingfleet (1702–1771) educated at Trinity College Cambridge, was a botanist, translator, author and proficient on the violoncello. He was devoted to the works of the celebrated Venetian violinist and composer Tartini (1692 – 1770) and aimed with this book to make his theories and ideas accessible to an English audience.
