Description: April 1882 44 LOIRE-ATLANTIQUE. NANTES. Action de F500. green, black. #4000. No 3998. Founded 1882 by Rémy Bernard. It was one of the first French shipping companies to operate steam ships (rather than 'mixed' sailing ships with an auxiliary steam engine). The most famous passengers of the "Nantaise" were the "recidivists", that is the convicts. In 1886 a first trip to New Caledonia via Natal with 50 soldiers escorting 332 convicts took place. In a second voyage, prisoners in Algiers were shipped to the penal colonies of Guyane. And so on... Became part of the Co. Générale Transatlantique et des Chargeurs de l'Ouest in 1917. First time in our auctions.
