Neil Leifer 1942 - American chromogenic colour print Secretariat, Kentucky Derby 14 1/2 x 19 inches 36.8 x 48.3 centimeters signed and editioned 43/150 and on verso certified by Neil Leifer Provenance:Private Collection, Vancouver In addition to photographing 15 Olympic Games, four World Soccer Cups and countless Super Bowls, Neil Leifer has attended and shot 15 Kentucky Derbies. On May 5, 1973, the legendary Secretariat won the first leg of the Triple Crown at the Kentucky Derby by 2 ½ lengths and set a course record that is still standing today. Secretariat had broken out of the start gate last, but gradually moved up on the field as the race progressed, miraculously running each quarter mile faster than the previous one. Leifer was on the inside track of the backstretch, capturing Secretariat on his way to the tremendous and historic victory. The chestnut colt's four feet are suspended in the air, thus exemplifying the sensation of power and speed. Secretariat, Kentucky Derby perfectly captures the horse at his greatest and Leifer at his most accomplished. The sheet size of the photograph is 16 x 20 inches.
