Franz Anton Bustelli (1723-1763)

Bustelli, born in Switzerland, startet to work for Nymphenburg in 1754 and was soon known as one of the most important porcelain artists of the rococo. He created figurines of all sorts, amongst them religious, mythologist and Chinese motives. His most popular and sought after figures are the sixteen beautiful ones he created for his series Commedia dell’Arte. Bustellis figures all feature long mannerist limbs as well as the flat and simple Rocaille-base.

Porcelain Manufactory Nymphenburg

Since the 18th century, fine porcelain has been elaborately manufactured by hand in Nymphenburg. In 1753, the porcelain manufactory Nymphenburg was established in Neudeck and in 1761 the factory moved near to the Elector’s palace at Nymphenburg, where it remained until today. When Franz Anton Bustelli was appointed master modeler in 1754, the artistic upswing of the factory began. Already ten years later it achieved international fame. From then onwards (until today) successful cooperation with renowned artists and designers followed. Products by the porcelain manufactory are still awarded with prizes and are exhibited in international collections. (kre)
