Description: [O. HENRY] PORTER, WILLIAM SYDNEY
Mansucript titled "Unfinished O. Henry Letter to Harry Peyton Steger"
. [N.p.: circa 1910]. Six page letter in pencil on long sheets (12 3/4 x 8 inches), unsigned, each sheet silked and mounted to card. Full morocco binding by The French Binders, the upper cover stamped with the above title. Some wear to joints, the sheets darkened and with some small repairs.
This long, albeit partial, letter begins "My idea is to write the story of a man - an individual, not a type..." and continues to discuss this idea for a novel, criticism of autobiographies and other literary matters including reference to Rousseau and Zola. Harry Peyton Steger was a literary adviser for Doubleday, Page and was the editor of the collected stories of O. Henry as well as as the literary executor of his estate. This letter was found among O.Henry's papers after his death and published by Steger.
