Description: Oil on canvas inscribed "M.E. Simons/Painter/March 1835" verso possibly Milton E. Simons (American, c. 1830s, active in NY), portrait of seated woman holding red book inscribed "B. Blakeslee" on cover, sitter dressed in black silk gown with gigot sleeves, lace fichu, gold brooch and pendant earrings, and with coiled black hair secured by tortoiseshell mantilla, late 19th C. Shattuck stretcher wedges verso, craquelure, isolated tiny holes in canvas, past repairs, three patches visible verso corresponding to in-painted areas recto, some warping around stretchers, ebonized frame with gilt filet and corner blocks, not examined out of frame, ss: 25 3/4" h. x 23 1/8" w.
