DALE WILLIAM NICHOLS (American 1904-1995) Home for the Holidays - 1980 Oil on canvas Signed lower right and dated 1980. Also signed, titled and dated on verso. 30 inches x 40 inches Born in David City, Nebraska, artist Dale Nichols is perhaps best known for capturing the Midwest winter landscape he grew up in, finding beauty in their starkness and long shadows, such as in the featured lot. Nichols studied at the Chicago Academy of Fine Arts, at the Art Institute of Chicago with Carl Werntz and later with Joseph Binder in Vienna. Nichols was an advocate for upgrading the quality of art in illustration and advertising. He published his first book in 1935 (A Philosphy of Esthetics) and another in 1957, Figure Drawing. Succeeding Iowa artist Grant Wood, Nichols was the art editor of the Encyclopedia Britannica from 1942-1948 and from 1930-40 he served as the Carnegie visiting professor to the University of Illinois. During this same time, he also created artwork for industrial advertising. His career included eighteen solo exhibitions including over eighty regional and national exhibitions.
