Description: Olga Bielawska
The Veiled Side Table, Round, 2016
Marble, resin
Waterjet cutting inlay
Curated by Matter of Stuff
Hand-carved by Carrara Design Factory, Italy
35 x 70 x 70 cm (13.78 x 27.56 x 27.56 in)
Developed and produced during the ‘Matter of Stuff Designer Residency’ program in Montalcino

Provenance: Matter of Stuff, London, UK
Exhibited: Curated by Matter of Stuff, ME London Hotel, London, 17th-25th September 2016.

The Veiled is a collection of tables and trays carved from the best quality Italian marble with applied graphic monochrome pattern, intended to resemble striped folded silk. The contrast between the soft silk and the hard marble surface is one of the main themes of the collection.

Bielawska said of the collection: “I wanted something graphical and that's why I chose black and white, but it could also be made in different colour variations." (Olga Bielawska, (2016), Olga Bielawska creates visual effects with marble for Veiled tables, retrieved from http://www.dezeen.com/2016/09/26/olga-bielawska-matter-of-stuff-veiled-marble-tables-furniture-london-design-festival-2016/).

The collection draws striking similarities - as well as its name - to Roman statues such as Giovanni Strazza’s Veiled Virgin, and Rafaelle Monti’s, A Veiled Vestal Virgin, 1846-7. Also carved from carrara marble, the illusion of fabric over the virgin’s face is replicated in the gentle folds of Bielawska’s monochrome stripes and she cites the former as a strong influence: "It's incredible because she has a textile over her face and it looks so real," (Bielsawska, (2016), Olga Bielawska creates visual effects with marble for Veiled tables).

The collection was exhibited as part of the Curated by Matter of Stuff exhibition for the London Design Festival 2016, where three up-and-coming designers were asked to combine cutting-edge design with traditional Italian manufacturing.
