Lot 124: Original Artwork for Billboard Promoting Elvis Presley's Appearance at the Las Vegas Hilton
October 29, 2016
Memphis, TN, USALive Auction
An interesting artifact from the inner workings of the Colonel's dream factory, this original billboard artwork from Clanton-Ross, Inc. would have been submitted for approval prior to production. Various aspects of Elvis marketing and promotion decision-making are on display here, with the overall design, size and color themes being decided. The overall black-and-white sketch has a diagonal section of gold and blue across Elvis' image to denote the suggested colors, and mimics the 1973 Las Vegas Hilton January 26 through February 23 menu (turquoise and gold). Stamped on both the lower right and left side is "ALL ART WORK MUST BE RETURNED PROMPTLY To: ART DEPT. c/o CLANTON - ROSS INC. 712 S. Oregon, Tampa, Fla." Handwritten in the upper left is "30 SHEET POSTER." The artwork originally emanated from the 1999 Graceland Archives Auction, and remains a visually and historically compelling piece. The artwork rendering measures approximately 9 by 15 1/2 inches (22.86 by 39.37 cm). Accompanied by a letter of authenticity from Graceland Authenticated.
Condition Report: The artwork shows minimal wear, most likely associated with its original filing storage. Excellent condition.
