London, United KingdomLive Auction
Description: rare, from the Favolium edition of Spieghel del Werelt, or the Epitome, Galle's miniature version of Ortelius's Theatrum Orbis Terrarum, with the 1st plate impressions of the World and the Americas, printed recto and verso, respectively, the latter set within the verse text of Pieter Heyns, engraved maps, recto 160 x 220mm., verso 80 x 110mm., Latin text verso with page number 4, full margins, pale browning on faint central vertical fold, [Shirley 132 and Burden 48, respectively], Antwerp, . The Ortelius-Galle miniature atlas has a particularly complex publishing history, with numerous editions of both maps. Both of these are from the first plates, that of the World being dated 1574, though the first issue was not until 1577. The Favolium edition is distinguished by its large paper format, allowing the few bigger maps to be bound in without folding, although this particular copy seems to have been bound as a double-page. It is also the only edition with the map of America appearing on the verso, set within the double-coloumn verse text.
