Notes: Originaire d'Espagne, Oscar Dominguez, se rend à Paris en 1929 afin de travailler pour la société d'exportation de son père. Parallèlement, ses aptitudes artistiques se précisent à la fois en peinture et en sculpture. Peu de temps après, il rencontre André Breton et tout le cercle surréaliste parisien. Breton est séduit par la vision poétique de Dominguez et l'accueille officiellement au sein du groupe des Surréalistes en 1935. Dominguez s'employe à tisser des liens entre le Surréalisme et l'Espagne. La Guerre Civile espagnole (1936-39) marque profondément son oeuvre et avec l'aide de Marie-Laure de Noailles, il commence à exposer internationalement. Sa vie et son oeuvre prennent fin prématurément avec son suicide en décembre 1957.
Combat de gladiateurs est une oeuvre considéré par Oscar Dominguez comme l'une des plus importantes de l'année 1947. Elle " (...) fut longtemps conservée par l'artiste, dans son atelier de la rue Campagne-Première à Paris. Au verso, Oscar Dominguez réalisa une composition qui anticipera de huit ans la fameuse série Des maisons" (R. de Sosa, op.cit., 1989, p. 163).
Oscar Dominguez came to Paris from his native Spain in 1929 to work for his father's export company. He had just begun to explore his own artistic talents, both in painting and in sculpture, when soon after he met André Breton and the Surrealist circle of Paris. Breton was seduced by Dominguez's poetic vision, and he was officially welcomed into the fold in 1935. Within the members of the group, Dominguez served as a important link between Surrealism and Spain. The Spanish Civil War (1936-39) would profoundly mark his work, and with the aid and support of Marie-Laure de Noailles, Dominguez's work began to be exhibited on the international stage. His life and work came to an early end with his suicide in December 1957.
Combat de gladiateurs was considered by the artist to be his most important work of 1947 and kept it in his Paris studio for a number of years following its completion. The composition on the verso anticipates Dominguez's "Houses" series of 1954 (R. de Sosa, op. cit., 1989, p. 163).
