Description: PAINTING OF THE SCHOONER EMMA L. GREGORY. Oil on canvas, signed lower right "JG Babbidge Feb. 1877 No. 5" (James Gardner Babbidge, Maine, 1844-1919). A fine portrait of the Emma L. Gregory with the captain, G.A. Thorndyke, identified by the artist in the lower right. A note on verso indicates that the painting "lay four months under ninety feet of water in Long Island Sound". Laid down on masonite with minor inpainting. 20"h. 29"w. Period gilt frame 23 1/4"h. 32 1/4"w.
