Notes: Cette oeuvre est une étude préparatoire pour le tableau Sérénité (Fig. 1), exécuté par Delvaux en 1971. Dans la version finale l'architecture a englouti la majeure partie des arbres et des buissons créant de la sorte une mise en scène si étouffante qu'elle donne l'impression d'emprisonner la femme à la cape bleue qui est assise au premier plan. Cette Vierge Marie actuelle présentée dans un cadre qui évoque une église romane rappelle les compositions des Primitifs Flammands et de Jan Van Eyck à qui Delvaux était tellement redevable.

The present work is a preparatory study for the painting Sérénité (Fig. 1), painted by Delvaux in 1971. In the final work, the architecture has engulfed most of the trees and shrubs, to create a stark and claustrophobic setting, almost imprisoning the woman with the blue cape seated in the foreground. This modern day Virgin Mary, seated in a setting that recalls a Romanesque church, echoes the compositions of the Flemish primitives and Jan Van Eyck that Delvaux was so indebted to.
