Description: Paul-Hippolyte Delaroche (Paris 1797-1856)
The Virgin and Child, inscribed in a circle, with lightly indicated angels
pencil, white chalk, watermark [D&C] BLA[UW]
8 7/8 x 9½ in. (222 x 241 mm.)
Provenance: The artist's son; Paris, Hôtel Drouot, 12-13 June 1857, lot 53.
Published: H. Delaborde and J. Gaddé, Oeuvre de Paul Delaroche, reproduit en photographie par Bingham, Paris, Goupil, 1858, pl. 86.
Notes: According to Delaborde and Gaddé this composition was Delaroche's last before his death in 1856. He had intended to make a large scale painting. The lightly indicated angels beyond the circular border suggests the artist was thinking of a more monumental work.
