CATALOGUE NOTE
Paul Manship came to prominence in the second decade of the 20th century as one of America's foremost sculptors. His re-interpretation of classical forms and themes was in part indebted to his stay in Rome at the American Academy. He won the three year fellowship there in 1909 at the young age of 23. Manship used the opportunity of the fellowship to travel extensively in Greece as well as Italy, gathering a profound understanding of Classical art.
The type of 'Venus Anadyomene' represents the goddess rising from the waves, wringing the water from her hair and is thought to have been derived from an ancient prototype by Apelles. Manship's Venus Anadyomene was originally designed as the centerpiece for a marble fountain commissioned by Phillips Academy, Andover, Massachusetts. Another reduced bronze version is in the Minnesota Museum of Art.
According to Edwin Murtha's 1957 book on Manship, there were 20 casts made of this small version of Venus Anadyomene.
