PAUL PEEL OSA RCA 1860 - 1892 Woman with Spinning Wheel oil on canvas signed and dated 1883 21.5 x 17 in 54.6 x 43.2 cm Peel was in Paris studying with Jean-LEon GErome at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in 1882 and possibly 1883. Peel kept a studio in Paris south of the Luxembourg Gardens at the fringe of the artists' district Montparnasse and frequented the major museums and galleries nearby. In 1883, Peel submitted a work to the Paris Salon exhibition, no doubt assisted by GErome, who was well placed in French art circles and frequently a member of the jury for this exhibition, and who was known to assist his students in their efforts to be accepted. To Peel's delight, his painting was accepted, a great accomplishment for a young artist. The theme of knitting and spinning comes up frequently in his work at this time. This beautiful painting is reminiscent of Vermeer with its light falling through the window into a darker interior, illuminating the single figure at work. This peaceful scene has great balance in composition, with the rich earth tones in the room serving as a tonal backdrop for the spinner. Peel brings the viewer's attention up to the woman's face with the bright red scarf, then up through the burst of light and green foliage in the window.
