Author: John Foxe - John Foxe was an English historian and martyrologist, the author of "Actes and Monuments" (popularly known as Foxe's "Book of Martyrs"), an account of Christian martyrs throughout Western history but emphasizing the sufferings of English Protestants and proto-Protestants from the fourteenth century through the reign of Mary I. Book Details: A chronicle of torture with many illustrations nearly all involving the persecution of Protestants (or other heretics) by Catholics. This popular book was a source of anti-Catholicism in Great Britain in the late 18th and early 19th centuries.
Condition / Notes: This antique volume is bound in later full leather with stamped gilt lettering and raised bands on the spine. The exterior shows light shelf wear. The binding is sound. The frontispiece depicts the crucifixion. The pages show mild to moderate age toning and scattered light foxing, as well as some edge wear/loss. The work is profusely illustrated with engraved plates.
