Rosseau was often invited by his patrons to hunt and paint on their estates. Percy Rockefeller made Rosseau a member of his hunting club at Overhills, on his estate in near Fayetteville, North Carolina, and had a studio built there for the artist. Rockefeller often lent his bird dogs to Rosseau as models. One of the dogs in this painting is believed to have belonged to Percy Rockefeller. The second dog belonged to Mr. Warren.
