Little information exists about Peter Schmauss. Genealogical records indicate that he was born in Germany and emigrated to the United States in 1875. He was a member of the Salmagundi Club and exhibited at the Corcoran Biennial of 1907. Among his works are images of the gardens of the Schoenbrunn Palace in Vienna. In this painting, he captures the quiet, near-desolate feeling of an urban park in winter. The emptiness and disarray of the snow-laden chairs express loneliness, while the sculptures preside with more presence than usual due to the bareness of the trees. The pink and blue shadows across the ground are, nonetheless, enjoyed by at least one park-goer, a woman in black seated on a bench.
