Description: 10 February 1796 PENNSYLVANIA. PHILADELPHIA. 1 Share. black on vellum. No 1158. Folds. The company was founded by William Bingham in 1792. It was only in 1797 that the toll-road was opened to traffic, but from the beginning it was a great commercial success, leading to a fever of road- and bridge-building in the following years. In1899 the state of Pennsylvania took down the toll-gates and abolished the payment of tolls. The share was printed on vellum, and counts as the second-oldest American share with a vignette (of a horse-drawn wagon on the road). A very fine piece of this very desirable share. Signed by W. Bingham (1752-1804). He was one of the richest men in Pennsylvania with career as privateer owner, trading, land developer, etc. He was also active in politics, as mentor of Alexander Hamilton, American Senator and Speaker of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives.
