Description: [ Photographs ] (Alaska) Group of approximately 50 photographs documenting the Alaskan land and peoples in and around Point Barrow, and including some strong images of Inuits in fur garments and surrounded by the snow-bound landscape, posed before their homes, both wooden shacks and igloos, by the remains of whale carcasses, standing at sail-driven sleds, and at a whaling celebration, as well as some notable views of masted schooners in the arctic waters and beached on the snow; all but 4 cabinet cards. Albumen, printing-out paper and 4 cyanotype prints, the majority approximately 4 x 5.5 inches or the reverse, many with handwritten period captions, in ink, on mount recto and the majority with period penciled captions and dates on verso or mount verso. Late 1880s-90s E2,500-3,500 An uncommon group of historical images chronicling activities at Point Barrow, the northern most point of Alaska, located on the Arctic Ocean and over 500 miles north of both Nome and Fairbanks.
