Pierre-Jules Mene
French, 1810-1879
chasse en ecosse - la prise du renard (the scottish hunt)
signed and dated: P.J. Mene 1861 and inscribed F. BARBEDIENNE FONDEUR
bronze, dark brown patina
53.8 by 72.2 cm., 21 1/4 by 28 1/2 in.
Of Mene's Scottish-inspired bronze compositions, the Chasse en Ecosse is the most ambitious, the raked base framing the stage-like setting of this impressive hunting scene. The wax model was exhibited for the first time at the Salon of 1861 and subsequently in silver at the 1862 and 1867 International Exhibitions. The huntsman with the fox, together with the hound that appears between them, was also edited as a single-figure group on a round base, called Ecossais montrant un renard a un chien.
