Notes: The present group of Veneur Louis XV à cheval dates to 1874 and reproduces the mounted huntsman from the larger 1872 Salon exhibit of Valet de chasse (Louis XV) et sa harde. This larger group included five hounds and was listed as no.1 in the Susse Frères foundry catalogue of Mêne's work (it also appeared with three hounds on a smaller base). The present Veneur Louis XV à cheval was listed as no.5 in the Mêne catalogue, and together with the larger group they closely relate to the similar Valet de chiens à cheval menant sa harde (1869, Louvre, RF185) differing only in the modelling of the Veneur's tricorn cap, double-breasted costume and riding boots which identify him in an earlier historical setting.
