In the Courtyard signed 'Outin' (lower right) oil on canvas 341/2 x 271/2 in. (87.6 x 69.8 cm.) (10) EXHIBITION Ornans, Mus‚e Courbet, Les Orientalistes chez Courbet, 2001, no. 85. NOTES Pierre Outin flourished under the tutelage of Alexandre Cabanel as well as the history painter Charles-Joseph Lecointe and began exhibiting at the Paris Salon as early as 1868. Predominantly known for his ancienne genre scenes, his rather limited number of Orientalist compositions are outstanding for their rich texture and bold color combinations. In In the Courtyard, the various textiles, cushion covers and carpets are rendered with great detail and vividness and through their brilliant juxtaposition, a jewel-like effect is created. The spirit of the Oriental courtyard is established with the detailed turquoise tile panels, crisp white stucco walls, limestone columns and is then further enriched by the peeking blue sky and the green banana tree.
