November 19, 2016
Vienna, Vienna, AustriaLive Auction
Fired clay. Pre-Columbian America, Lambayeque, approx. 1000 to 1200
Slanted, flared foot with geometric relief, lower and upper vessel halves are also diagonal and slightly bowed; the pipe barrel stands out on an accentuated slant. From here a curved handle leads to the head of each animal. The two perform a so-called mythical "marriage" - the animal with the broadly flat head is a frog, the one on top is a so-called "moon animal". Beautiful black-grey, brownish with mottling corresponding to age, good preservation.
HEIGHT 17,3 CM, LENGTH 18 CM
Former collection of Dr. Gottfried Eysank of Marienfels, Bad Schönau, Lower Austria, acquired prior to 1970
