Description: Pope, Alexander. THE DUNCIAD, VARIORUM. WITH THE PROLEGOMENA OF SCRIBLERUS. London: A. Dod., 1729. 4to (275 x 205mm.) [*]1, a-b4, B-O4, P2 Q-X4 (additional addenda leaf not bound in this copy.) Engraved title featuring laden donkey vignette. Full crimson levant by the Club Bindery, boards framed in gilt, gilt in compartments to spine, gilt dentelles, and marbled endpapers. Scuffs to front board, hinges, some minor scuffs to edges, light loss at head and tail. Contents excellent overall though there are a few minor blemishes and one or two short closed marginal tears. An exceptional, untrimmed, and tall copy. ********************************* A beautiful example of the second version of Pope's landmark literary satire. The present copy bears the ownership labels (front pastedown) of Robert Hoe and Beverly Chew. The only appearance we locate for this copy dates back to a 1929 Scribner's catalogue (which refers to the present as a "very fine copy" and "the first complete edition.") This, the second version, was expanded upon the first.
