Notes: Property from the Estate of Richard Ward Foster
According to Barbara A. Wolanin, the present work is one among a series of three portraits of Helen Seyffert depicted in a similar pose that the artist painted in 1920 and 1921. This work resembles the final composition titled Woman in White (1920, Estate of Joseph H. Hirshorn), which is illustrated in the exhibition catalogue, Arthur B. Carles: Painting with Color . Mrs. Seyffert was a fellow painter and the wife of portrait painter Leopold Seyffert.
