PORTRAITS OF JOHN AND CAROLINE BROKAW BY ROBERT SEEVERS (OHIO, BORN 1807).
Pencil on paper, Caroline is signed on verso and dated August 15, 1831. Fine pair of profile portraits of the Brokaws, he has coiffured hair and she is wearing a tortoise shell hair comb. Imperfections. 10"h. 8"w., in their original walnut frames, 12 3/4"h. 11"w.
John Brokaw was born in New Jersey and migrated to Ohio with his father in 1823. When his father died, he returned to New Jersey. In 1827 he married Caroline Bush and the couple set their sights on Ohio once again. They settled in or near Smithfield, Jefferson County, in 1831, presumably where these portraits were drawn. By mid century they had removed to Morrow County where they are listed in the 1850 and 1860 Censuses. Caroline died about 1885 and John died in 1893; they are buried in Mount Gilead.

, August 2007, pp. 90-97.
Both toned with wrinkling and some foxing, minor margin damage, he has some water damage and some loss to the paper surface along the lower margin. Both are untrimmed and not laid down. The frames have been refinished and have separation at the joints (Caroline's has later staple reinforcements) and have old, wavy glass. Good, as-found condition. The backing paper in the frames are fragments from late 19th century Mt. Gilead, Ohio newspapers.
