Woodbury, CT, USALive Auction
Description: Attributed to Pierre Auguste Renoir (French, 1841-1919), "Guitar Player" oil on canvas signed lower right "Renoir". Sight size: 14 3/4" high, 9" wide. Frame size: 22 3/4" high, 17" wide. Condition: crazing, some inpaint in small areas around guitar, body, neck, upper left corner, and a few small areas throughout. Provenance: Viscount, Lord Margesson Oliv, Lady Bailie. Purchased, Adams Gallery, London 1949. Note: Extensive documentation available to prospective bidders showing the above lot was valued at 10,000 pounds in 1975 by Sotheby's as an example of an early (1863-67) Renoir, an opinion subsequently disputed by Francois Daulte, although further correspondence with Lord Margesson reveals the Adams Gallery maintained the painting was genuine and previously in the Vollard Collection (having been purchased in 1949 for 3,500 pounds).
