A D-section gold hoop with stylised black-enamelled skull to the outer face, inscribed to the inner face 'Tho Foley Esq : obt :7 : oct : 77' and maker's mark 'SR' within an escutcheon. 3.47 grams, 18mm overall, 15.27mm internal diameter (approximate size British I, USA 4 1/2, Europe 7.97, Japan 7) (3/4"). Ex Williams collection, Shropshire, UK; by descent 2009. On this day, the second stage of the Battle of Saratoga was fought, which proved to be a turning point in the American struggle for independence.
