Lot 1782: Post Medieval Renaissance Gold Ring with Sapphire

Description: 16th century AD. A D-section gold hoop with scrolled tendrils to the shoulders, scooped rectangular-section bezel with D-shaped ornamented panels, inset faceted corn-blue sapphire. British Rings 800-1914, London, 1974, plate 26(A"). 4.08 grams, 26mm overall, 18.78mm internal diameter (approximate size British R, USA 8 3/4, Europe 19.0, Japan 18) (1"). Property of a Sussex gentleman; acquired before 1990. Accompanied by a positive X-Ray Fluorescence metal analysis certificate. The stone was examined in detail by Dr. Bonewitz who observed: 'The cutting of the stone is of an early post-medieval date, and comes from a time before the directional cutting hardness of sapphire was recognised.'
Condition Report: Very fine condition. A large wearable size.
