Description: 19th century AD. A large rectangular wooden icon with painted Tikhvin Mother of God (?????????? ??????????) covered by a silver riza (oklad) with repouss? foliage decoration and stamped hallmark; inscription to the left ????????oi ?????? ??(?) (for The Tikhvin Most Holy Mother of God"). 829 grams, 27.4 x 21cm (10 3/4 x 8 1/4"). From a private collection formed in the 1990s. The Theotokos of Tikhvin is one of the most celebrated Orthodox Christian icons, thought to be written by St. Luke the Evangelist in Jerusalem. In the Russian tradition, it miraculously appeared near Tikhvin in 1383 and this version is considered to be written by a Russian artist around 1300. Since the 14th century, the icon was held in Tikhvin, where a monastery was founded to host the icon. During the World War II, the icon was taken out of Russia in order to protect it from looting and ended up in Chicago. It was finally returned to the Tikhvin monastery in 1994.

Condition Report: Fine condition, minor damage to the riza.
