Description: Late 17th century AD. A walnut and fruitwood marquetry panel showing six male figures, two elderly males, one in a turban and another counting money and holding a money bag; in front a youth with hands clasped in prayer, with eyes raised; to the side three males, one holding a staff, and one pointing to money on a rock; to the back a tree and camel; later hanging hook to the back. 1.56 kg, 52x41cm (20 1/2 x 16"). Property of a Sussex, UK collector; acquired UK 1990s. The scene possibly represents the Old Testament story of Joseph being sold into slavery by his jealous brothers. Panels such as this were produced in Uhlm, Germany, from the 16th to 17th centuries, and formed panels for large pieces of furniture, such as cabinets, or table tops.
