Named after Richard Wagner's opera Das Rheingold, an opus which romanticized the Rhein river, the Rheingold Express was a train which ran between the Hook of Holland and Basel, Switzerland. The train was the most luxurious in German service at the time, giving Pullman and the Compagnie General des Wagons Lits a real run for their money. The Rheingold's luxurious and spacious Middle European Sleeping and Dining Car Company (Mitropa) carriages were designed by famous architects and artists of the era. Wagons-Lits 197, Train p. 25.
