Physician and ethnologist James Cowles Prichard, physician and ethnologist, was (along with William Lawrence and Charles William Wells) one of the three British scientific precursors to Darwin and evolutionary theory. His central idea was the unity of mankind as a variegated but single species. He was one of the first scientists to suggest that Africa was the original source of the human racial diaspora.
