CATALOGUE NOTE
A version of the present painting, of very similar size, was in a private collection in Modena (see F. Arisi, Gian Paolo Panini e i fasti della Roma del '700, Rome 1986, p. 248, cat. no. 62, reproduced). There are a number of differences between the two versions, notably in the background landscape, to the trees on the left and in the figures, amongst which are omitted both the philosopher and the soldier standing on the ruin behind him. Arisi (op. cit.) suggests that the figure in a cap on the left of the design may have been intended as a self-portrait.
We are grateful to Prof. David Ryley Marshall for endorsing the attribution to Panini on the basis of a colour transparency. He groups this amongst other early works by the artist, probably painted in the second decade of the 18th century.
